Building a Lasting Road Safety Culture in Ethiopia
Our purpose is to help build a lasting road safety culture throughout Ethiopia.
At BAB, we believe that defensive driving is one of the most effective ways to achieve this. When drivers learn to recognise hazards, manage risk, control their emotions, and make safer decisions, they not only protect themselves but everyone who shares the road. Every trained driver becomes part of a safer road safety culture.
Over nearly two decades of experience, we have seen that changing driver behaviour is one of the most effective ways to prevent road crashes. We pursue this purpose through three strategic areas of work.
Corporate Road Safety
For nearly two decades, Corporate Road Safety has been the foundation of our work.
We have partnered with companies and organisations to strengthen their internal road safety culture through defensive driving programmes and professional driver development. By helping organisations develop safer employees, fleet drivers, and managers, we help reduce operational risk while creating safer roads for everyone.
Looking ahead, we aim to work with many more organisations across Ethiopia, helping road safety become an integral part of every company's culture.
Community Driver Development
Building a road safety culture also means reaching the wider community.
For approximately two years, Belachew Abebe shared practical road safety and defensive driving education with the public through Sheger FM, helping raise awareness beyond the classroom.
Our vision is to expand this work by bringing road safety education to even more people through radio, television, and other public awareness initiatives. We also aim to establish a dedicated training centre where individual drivers can access professional defensive driving courses, coaching, and driver assessments.
Public Transport Safety Initiative
Public transport plays a vital role in Ethiopia's road network and influences the safety of thousands of passengers every day.
BAB has previously provided defensive driving training to Anbessa Bus drivers, demonstrating the value that professional driver education can bring to public transport.
Our vision is to expand this work in a sustainable way by partnering with government institutions, NGOs, development organisations, and other stakeholders. Together, we hope to deliver long-term training programmes for taxi drivers, minibus operators, city buses, regional passenger transport services, and other commercial drivers across Ethiopia.
